The main viewpoints presented in this article: (1) The great inertia of the massively connected Internet system slows down the process of fundamental change of network technology. Network technology with IP as the core will dominate the development of the communication network industry in the next 5 to 10 years. However, revolutionary new elements such as Software Dened Network (SDN), Network Functional Virtualization (NFV), and information centric network (ICN), etc., are being integrated into the existing IP-based system. (2) The convergence of the communication network technology has become an important developmental trend. The communication network ecologic system will move from closed to open, and consequently its technology chain and industrial chain will enter a new period of reform and remodeling. (3) The development of emerging Internet applications has put forward higher requirements for network transmission rate and capacity. From the application point of view, the future development of the information network involving "speeding the rate while downing the cost" is still a long way to go. (4) The fundamental theory and methods of the traditional communication network design are facing great challenges for very large scaled systems. The new design methods based on big data and statistical law are in the initial stage. The relevant key devices or components, supporting software, terminal application mode, and network structure will have to breed some changes to make the next wave of new breakthroughs possible.
